LA Travel Time Calculator

I've calculated the actual travel times in Los Angeles. The joke that 'everywhere takes 20 minutes' is, I've determined, optimistic by a factor of approximately 2.3.

The Calcutainer's Traffic Report

Methodology: This is an entertainment/estimation model using neighborhood-distance assumptions and multipliers, not live traffic or routing. Multipliers: time of day 0.7×–2.0×, day 0.8×–1.2×, weather 1.0×–1.5×, special event 1.5×. The movie time is always 20 minutes. It is usually wrong.

How this calculation works

Methodology: This is an entertainment and estimation model using selected-neighborhood assumptions rather than real geocoding. It generates a deterministic pseudo-distance between neighborhoods, then applies visible multipliers: early morning 0.8×, morning rush 1.8×, midday 1.0×, evening rush 2.0×, night 0.7×; weekday 1.0×, Friday 1.2×, weekend 0.8×; clear 1.0×, rain 1.5×, fog 1.3×; special event 1.5×.

Important caveats

  • This calculator is not live routing and does not use current incidents, road closures, transit disruptions, or real-time congestion.
  • The neighborhood distance is a repeatable site-specific estimate, not a measured route distance.
  • Real travel times can change quickly because of incidents, road closures, event traffic, transit delays, weather, parking constraints, and route choice.
  • Use a current map, navigation, or transit service before making real-world travel decisions.
